MS Word class kicks off series

Teaming 4 Technology has recently begun offering workshops to help nonprofits get more familiar with MS Windows 2007. Last month, Asha Frazier, T4T help desk intern, started off with MS Word.

In January, Asha showed a group the user interface of the new word processing program. It looks a bit strange to those familiar with the 2003 version, but with graphical controls laid out in a similar fashion, it’s fairly easy for most to learn.

The main feature is the ribbon, a horizontal row of choices, which replaces the former menu layout. It was created to make the features reachable with fewer clicks of the mouse, according to a demo included with new product. At the top and left, the Office button opens the File menu, and the New, Open, Save, Print and Close functions of 2003 are now available by clicking that round graphic with the red, orange, green and blue icon.

Tabs replace menus, and the main ones in Word 2007 are Home, Insert, Page Layout, References, Mailings, Review and View. Other “contextual” tabs appear above the ribbon when objects are selected. For example, those for “Header & Footer Tools” and “Table Tools” show a pastel colored rectangle at the very top of the screen.

MS Word 2007 saves files in .docx format. For efficient communication, click on the Office Button and choose Save As “Word 97-2003 Document” to convert the document, especially an attachment, to a .doc format so it can be opened with a lower version.
