Southside Education Center for Youth
Southside Students Get a Boost!
On 111th street, Vivian Taylor and her initiative to educate children of low-income is making a dramatic impact. "Thanks to the Teaming for Technology Initiative, our center is now completing its first tech plan, while enjoying our donation of 5 new computers from IBM." The Southside Education Center for Youth offers affordable after-school and summer programs to children in Roseland and West Pullman communities. All programs are intended for low-income children, ages 6-15, promoting high academic achievement, strong character growth and positive self-esteem. Through child development training, SECY also works with parents, foster parents, and childcare workers of students to facilitate better understanding between students and adults.
"Our goal is to develop a networked computer lab for our literacy program. Teaming for Technology has provided the resources needed to reach our goals." Through the Technology Assistance Program, Teaming for Technology has allotted the necessary hardware to furnish this center's needs. With thanks to the Teaming for Technology Volunteer Program, which targets professional-level volunteers to give back to the community, SECY received free assistance in wiring this new computer lab. Additionally, by way of a Strategic Technology Planning Workshop and constant interaction with the five VISTA members, SECY has established a plan for achieving its technology goals. "The resources and technical support have been extremely helpful to me as a director."
